Mark experienced tinnitus for the first time last year
"When I developed tinnitus, I felt quite isolated and found myself feeling anxious. I called the Tinnitus Helpline and they were incredibly understanding, and helped me realise that tinnitus is in fact a common condition. Just knowing that I wasn't alone gave me the confidence to seek help from my GP and, after a referral to my local ear, nose and throat (ENT) department, I am successfully managing my tinnitus."
Jane has had tinnitus for 10 years
"The Tinnitus Helpline was most sympathetic to my situation and sent me useful information on products I could use to help me get to sleep at night. I have found the under-pillow speaker from RNID Products really helps, as well as relaxation tapes. Without the support from the Helpline, I feel I would be having many more sleepless nights!"
Thomas aged 63 has had tinnitus for 7 years
"Dealing with the tinnitus is really down to the individual. I was told after tests that mine is extremely loud. I made a mental decision to cope with it as I was told there is no cure… Mind over matter is really useful in dealing with it as this approach helps me to ignore the discomfort – even though it is constant – and get on with life. Keeping the mind occupied also helps a lot."
Alex aged 53 from Plymouth
"All the doctors said at the beginning 'live with it', which was hard to comprehend. But at the end of the day, you have got to learn to live with it. I've had tinnitus for 10 years and I've learnt to accept it as part of my life."
